Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS)




Businesses who have experienced a drop in sales due to the COVID-19 may apply for a subsidy to cover part of their rent expenses. Periods companies can apply starts on September 27, 2020 and ends on June 21, 2021


Covered Expenses

For each period businesses can claim up to $75,000 per business location and up to $300,000 in total for all affiliated businesses.


Only amounts paid to an arm's-length party can be included. A written rental agreement must be in place before October 9, 2020. Private homes and cottages are not qualifying properties.


If you rent qualifying property, the eligible expenses are: base rent, customary operating expenses and property taxes. Amounts ca not include GST/HST.


If you own qualifying property, the eligible expenses are: insurance, interest on mortgage and property taxes.


Rent subsidy rate is based on decrease in revenue. Additional lockdown support is available for affected businesses.


Businesses must apply for CERS online through "My Business Account" at CRA.
